Creating a Marketing System for E-Commerce
In 2017 I started a small e-commerce shop selling a variety of art goods, prints and t-shirts, and the likes. By the end of the year, my wife had suggested making candles together, which quickly grew into our primary business. Between 2018 and 2020 we created and marketed a business that sold nearly $40,000 of home fragrance products including candles, reed diffusers, and incense. We developed a website, email marketing program, and retailer print goods while also creating an active social media presence and generating photos and videos regularly.

What Was Learned?
As with any ‘side hustle’, the hardest part of running Loxley and Leaf was finding time to support the marketing for what became a burgeoning small enterprise on top of making product. We struggled to maintain regularity with our marketing. We also learned the hard way (more than once) that an underdeveloped digital advertising strategy can sink a marketing budget, and as the pandemic hit, we scaled back our operation.
